Dare writes: "There are four churches in Coniston united in proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ, whilst maintaining their own identities and offering a wide range of worship styles. We come together as Churches Together in Coniston and share a good number of activities under that heading and in many less formal ways. St Andrew's publishes a monthly Parish Newsletter keeping the whole village up to date with what's happening throughout the whole community." |
|
The 'Good News Van' This is rather like a mobile library service bringing you Christian books to borrow. The Van visits once a month (watch the Parish Newsletter and our Events Diary for precise dates). The venue is usually the home of a local church member where light refreshments are offered while the books are perused. You will be most welcome! |

CTC held their Annual General Meeting on 24 June, 2001, and welcomed Rev Andrew Dodd, County Ecumenical Officer as their special guest. Andrew and his family led worship in music, sketches and word. The meeting heard the Chairman's Report for the past year, elected officers for the coming year and began a discussion on the Aims and Purposes of CTC. That debate will continue in the individual congregations over the next year with the hope that a final Statement will be brought to next year's AGM for adoption. Meanwhile CTC are urgently seeking the services of a Publicity Officer and anyone interested in taking on this role is invited to contact the Secretary, Dare Holland, on 41594. |

John Ruskin's Grave |
LITERARY CONNECTIONS: In the north-east corner of the churchyard lies John
Ruskin beneath
a Celtic cross, the carving of which represents his work. The cross is
also a tribute to W.G.Collingwood who lies nearby with his
family. John Ruskin spent his last decades at Brantwood
across the lake. He was buried here on 21st January, 1900, at
his own request, instead of Westminster Abbey, a decision which
reflects his regard for Coniston.

| The Parish Church
at Torver was
dedicated to St Luke in 1884 when it was discovered that there had been
no dedication hitherto. In Ellwood's Forty-five
years in a Mountain Parish there is an illustration of how
the building had appeared before 1849. It was a small, low
building, white-washed, with a slated roof of fairly steep
pitch. The low bell-tower, like the porch, was also
slated. Had that building not been pulled down it would have
been regarded now as a gem of Lakeland vernacular
architecture. Indeed John Ruskin, commenting on the present
building in a letter to Ellwood declared that clergymen ought to
understand that the old white-washed churches were most in keeping with
the surrounding scenery. More detailed information available in the church |

Coniston Christian Fellowship is part of God's family, made up of people of all ages and backgrounds, who have a common desire to discover what God is saying to us in the 21st Century. We meet each Sunday at 10.30 am in Coniston Primary School. Our meetings are designed so that all ages can learn together in an informal atmosphere, though our theme for the day is explored in a structured manner. Our meetings are fun and full of life, relevant to life in the 21st century |

As a fellowship we
believe that the Bible is central to the Christian faith.
As a result we meet in house-groups during the week
to study God's word and work out our faith in a practical
way. At present we hold two house-groups: |
|
|
Jesus told us to remember him by a simple ceremony and so we celebrate Communion as part of our worship on the last Sunday of each month. We simply pass round bread and grape juice, as at the Last Supper, to remember Jesus and his love for us. All may participate if they love Jesus and have experienced his offer of forgiveness of sins. |
|
|
On the first Sunday in each month we continue our meeting by sharing a meal together. Everyone brings a contribution and we trust that the right balance is achieved. We believe that Sunday is a day which God gave us to enjoy. |
|
|
On a wider perspective
we support Pedro and Stella Arias and their work amongst the Spanish
speakers in London, and Pedro's world-wide radio ministry through
collecting our loose change. |
