Horticultural Show 2001

Some of the vegetables exhibited at this very successful show

The Coniston & Torver Garden Club was  formed in 1996.  It now boasts an annual Horticultural Show,  expanding year on year.  There is a healthy rivalry between the green-fingered members who compete for prizes and enjoy showing their produce to the public at these open events.

Club events include

  • Evening meetings
  • Gardeners' Questions
  • Quiz nights
  • Coach trips and visits to gardens and horticultural events

Coniston Tidy Village Bloom Group

Chairman / Contact: Anne Pamplin Tel: 015394 41394

Coniston Tidy Village Bloom Group was formed in 1996.  Not only have they enhanced the main streets of the village with floral tubs and wall baskets but have even created a community compost area at Little Moss  -  the only one in the South Lakes region.  Several corners of the village have been improved by the group's landscaping work which has won them awards in "Cumbria in Bloom" and other competitions.
The efforts of this group also contributed to Coniston's success in the 1997
"Village of the Year" award.
Not content with their floral and landscaping work, the group went on to raise funds for brightening our street with
festive lighting at Christmas.

Sept 2003 brought more awards: Cumbria in Bloom Large Village Award, and was runner-up in the Tidy Village section.

Annual competitions are organised for the judging of Best Gardens and Vegetable Plots  -  very popular with our keen horticulturists.

Congratulations to all involved

Can we call them the

Coniston in Bloomers?

Thanks also to all who raised funds for the FESTIVE STREET-LIGHTING for Christmas.  Your donations, for next year,  will be gratefully received on our behalf by any of the following:  Anne Pamplin, John Stoddart, Hazel Nicholson, Elizabeth Robinson, Heather Wilkinson, Barbara Butterworth or Audrey Grisedale.

See News & Events / Events Diary for details of fund-raising events.

We won again!!  As previous winners of CUMBRIA IN BLOOM we were entered for the new CHAMPIONS LEAGUE of previous winners . . and WON that!
Now, in August 2001, we scooped the Cumbria in Bloom trophy again!

(See Photo above)

Thanks & congratulation to the hard working team of committee and villagers.

The Judges said:

"This is a lovely village to visit or live in"  and …

"It is very well looked after with lots of local involvement and sponsorship help"

Decoupage
The Découpage Group meets in the Library at Coniston Institute, usually on Wednesday evenings, producing delightful 3-dimensional pictures from all manner of easily obtainable materials.  The results are stunning!  Most of the members would admit to having no special skills but, with help and guidance, they achieve the most remarkable results.  Nimble fingers, simple tools and lots of patience and imagination are the pre-requisites of this craft work.
The rewards  -  personal satisfaction in fine work, plus happy companionship in a relaxed atmosphere.  Come and join in ...

Découpage Group members at work…

...and some examples of their superb craftsmanship.

There seems to be no age limit whatsoever for creating lovely découpage work.  Young and old alike can thoroughly enjoy this practical and creative pastime.  Present members of the group (all ladies!) expressed a genuine welcome to any gentleman who would like to learn the craft.

Coniston Life Long Learning - Local History Group

The Local History Group organises monthly lectures which are held in the Library at the Coniston Institute.  A better description would be "informal illustrated talks" (the word lectures being, perhaps, somewhat inhibiting).

See: News & Events / Events Diary for arranged events.

Dates and times may vary from month to month.  Always check the notice board outside the Library or contact our organising secretary:

Stella de Gruchy on 41140

The Group has no membership fee and anyone may attend the talks.  We normally charge £1.50 at the door, to defray expenses.   Visitors welcome.

A small organising team assists Stella in deciding future events.  Anyone keen to be involved, please get in touch.

A note about the Local History Group:

The Group was originally formed as part of the "Lifelong Learners" or LLL.  (Once referred to in the Westmorland Gazette as the Lifelong Leaners  -  some of us are still not certain which of these descriptions is more apt!)

However, the LLL, having given birth to a couple of small organisations like ours, has fallen into obscurity while the LHG continues to attract a monthly following of folks interested in what happened in our district in past ages.

Keep an eye on the Notice Board, or this website, for future events.  You'll be welcome at the Talks.   Perhaps you would like to suggest a subject for future dates;  or know of a speaker who would come and talk to us?  Contact Stella on 41140.
